Ensembles

Beginning Band

The DMS Beginning Band includes all 6th grade band students in the entire program. Students in Beginning Band participate in two concerts during the school year; the Demonstration Concert in December and the Spring Concert in May. Beginning Band students are also eligible to be nominated for the Georgia Music Educators Association District 13 First Year Honor Band.

7th Grade Concert Band

The 7th Grade Concert Band includes all 7th grade band students involved in the DMS band program. The 7th Grade Concert Band is split into two classes (7A & 7B) and meets 2.5 times a week during Connections. Students in the 7th grade band participate in at least 4 concerts per year; the Fall Concert in October, the Winter Concert in December, the LGPE Concert in February, and the Spring Concert in May. Students in the 7th Grade Concert Band are eligible to audition for the Georgia Music Educators Association District 13 Honor Band, which occurs in the spring. Students in the 7th Grade Concert Band are also eligible to audition for the Wildcat Winds Honor Ensemble (see below).

8th Grade Symphonic Band

The 8th Grade Symphonic Band includes all 8th grade band students involved in the DMS band program. The 8th Grade Symphonic Band is split into two classes (8A & 8B) and meets 2.5 times a week during Connections. Students in the 8th Grade Symphonic Band participate in at least 6 performances per year; the Fall Concert in October, 8th Grade Night at Duluth High School, the Winter Concert in December, the Pre-LGPE Concert in February, the LGPE Concert in March, and the Spring Concert in May. Students in the 8th Grade Symphonic Band are eligible to audition for the Georgia Music Educators Association District 13 Honor Band, which occurs in the spring. They are also eligible to be nominated for the University of Georgia Middle School Honor Band Festival (MidFest), which occurs in December. Students in the 8th Grade Symphonic Band can audition to be in the Wildcat Winds Honor Ensemble (see below).

Percussion Ensemble

The Duluth Middle School Percussion Ensemble consists of both percussionists and non-percussionists interested in learning percussion techniques through the playing of ensemble music written specifically for percussion instruments. Students in the Percussion Ensemble will meet during Wildcat Pride from Monday to Thursday. The Percussion Ensemble performs on at least three concerts per year and is on call for school and community performances throughout the school year.

Wildcat Winds

The Wildcat Winds Honor Ensemble consists of the top musicians in the entire band program. Wildcat Winds members are usually 7th and 8th graders, as they are more experienced on their instruments. Students in Wildcat Winds are held to a high behavior standard and are expected to be excellent representatives of the DMS Band program and Duluth Middle School. The Wildcat Winds travels throughout Duluth to perform for the community, including the Candlelight Luncheons at our cluster elementary schools and holiday performances throughout the school year in the DMS lobby.
